Special Considerations

Energy Efficiency: Installed high-efficiency HVAC equipment in compliance with California Title 24 energy codes.

Acoustical Considerations: Designed and installed quiet HVAC systems to support the acoustical needs of theater spaces.

Seismic Compliance: All mechanical installations were completed per California Building Code seismic standards.

Educational Facility Requirements: Customized mechanical systems were designed to meet the specific needs of classrooms, science labs, and performance environments.

Kevin M. Sullivan & Associates, Inc. provided HVAC, hydronic mechanical, and sheet metal flashing work for the new STEAM Classroom Building and Theater Building at Piedmont High School. The HVAC scope included air handlers, rooftop units, ductwork, and chilled and hot water piping for the three-story STEAM building with a walkout basement, totaling 42,705 sq. ft. The mechanical systems were designed to support science labs, classrooms, and common areas with reliable and efficient climate control. In the adjacent 20,800 sq. ft. two-story Theater Building, KMSA installed specialized HVAC systems tailored for performance spaces, ensuring quiet and effective ventilation for stage areas, audience seating, and backstage rooms. High-efficiency boilers and a complete hydronic distribution system were installed to meet the heating demands of both buildings. BACnet Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems were integrated for automated system management, while seismic bracing and vibration controls ensured compliance with California building codes. Final testing, adjusting, and balancing (TAB) confirmed all systems met design requirements. KMSA also provided exterior sheet metal flashing to protect rooftop HVAC equipment and ductwork from weather exposure.
