Joe Ruttenberg
Project Engineer
Joe brings over 30 years of expertise in HVAC system design, project management, and system automation. Throughout his career, he has worked on new construction, retrofits, and service HVAC projects across a diverse range of industries, including healthcare, semiconductor manufacturing, biotechnology, telecommunications, education, government, and high-rise buildings. His extensive background in building automation systems (BMS), sheet metal, piping, commissioning, and validation makes him a valuable resource for complex projects requiring seamless project integration.
One of Joe’s most notable projects is the Sutter Hospital Complex, a 22-year endeavor where he played a key role in both new construction and retrofitting efforts. With a $15 million budget for new developments and an $8 million budget for retrofits, Joe worked on energy centers, operating rooms, isolation rooms, medical gas monitoring, pressure control systems, and IT room integration. He was the primary point on the commissioning team, ensuring proper documentation and integration for building automation, fire, and security systems.
Joe holds a degree in Environmental Engineering (Solar & HVAC) from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and has additional certifications in Professional Sales and Mechanical Estimating from San Jose State University. He also completed Vibration Analyst - Category I training from Emerson, specializing in HVAC system detection and failure prevention.
Born in Redwood City, CA, Joe grew up in Cupertino and the Santa Cruz Mountains, long before the rise of Silicon Valley. With 65 years in Northern California, he has witnessed the region’s transformation firsthand. Outside of HVAC, he has a rich background in the food industry, working for 25+ years as a chef and manager before transitioning into engineering.
At Kevin M. Sullivan & Associates, Joe enjoys collaborating with a highly skilled and knowledgeable team, appreciating the company’s strong communication and teamwork. He finds fulfillment in tackling unique challenges, managing project parameters, and seeing complex HVAC systems come to life.
Beyond his professional career, Joe is a passionate cook, amateur musician (harmonica), and avid outdoorsman. He also dedicates time to volunteering at a horse ranch, cycling, playing board games, and enjoying nature.
